At first glance one might think they're looking at a top-tier 600 or superbike.</p> <p>The 50cc version is intended as the ultimate entry-level machine for young and beginning riders while the 125 is better suited for some experience and makes a more practical commuter (while also providing some spirited weekend romping on twisting back roads). </p> <p>Both Derbi motorcycles sport an aluminum twin beam perimeter chassis with gull wing-design swingarms. A full fairing with wedged tail section give the bikes racing aerodynamics while rear-set footpegs, drop bars, inverted forks, disc brakes and under-slung exhaust pipe reinforce the racing persona.</p> <p>The GPR 50cc and 125cc engines are carbureted and liquid-cooled with electric start. So, I went shopping for some leather treatment.<br /><br />The first thing I tried was some Blue Magic Leather Cream Conditioner. It is a watery liquid in a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spray_bottle" rel="wikipedia" title="Spray bottle">spray bottle</a> and th<img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359842633697821410" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SmH8ekmNguI/AAAAAAAAAjk/Gv0WqpcNJvw/s200/leathercreamconditioner_02.png" style="float: right; height: 200px; margin: 0px 0px 10px 10px; width: 182px;" />e leather bags just soaked it up almost as fast I could spray it. However, this did not help with the fading issue. Next I tried some Pro Clean Leather <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotion" rel="wikipedia" title="Lotion">Lotion</a>. It is the same watery liquid but is dispensed from a squirt bottle. It too helped with the moisturizing the leather, but not with the bleached black issue.<br /><br />After a year of commuting to work and my Mistress being parked out in the hot Texan sun for 12 hours at a time the black fading got <img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5359844669624494930" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SmH-VFA9K1I/AAAAAAAAAj8/UyVTMQ3y5uM/s200/leatherlotion.jpg" style="float: left; height: 200px; margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; width: 136px;" />even worse. I was browsing my local <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.yamaha.com/" rel="homepage" title="Yamaha Corporation">Yamaha</a> Dealer when I spotted some Yamalube Black Leather Polish on a shelf. It came in a small round container about the size of a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tobacco" rel="wikipedia" title="Tobacco">tobacco</a> dip can. I bought it to try it out.<br /><br />A few days before I tried it out I sprayed the <a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SmH8e0pwCmI/AAAAAAAAAjs/COCq6jkUSP0/s1600-h/leatherlotion.jpg"></a><a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddle" rel="wikipedia" title="Saddle">saddle</a> bags down real good with the Leather Cream Conditioner to let it soak in and moisturize the leather. Finally the day came when I gave the bike an extensive cleansing. After it was dried off I got out the Black Polish out and started the application. The Yamaha website says:<br /><br /><i><b>Black Leather Polish</b><br /><br />Use to restore black leather to its natural luster by putting color back into the leather. Can be used for black leather jackets, boots, bags, etc.</i><br /><br />I opened the small container of Black Leather Polish and found that it resembled black <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoe_polish" rel="wikipedia" title="Shoe polish">shoe polish</a> in color. In consistency it was a lot thinner paste than shoe polish, more like a cream. I applied it using a soft <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton" rel="wikipedia" title="Cotton">cotton</a> rag, translation, old <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-shirt" rel="wikipedia" title="T-shirt">T-Shirt</a>. After rubbing the Black Polish into the leather I immediately noticed the black color was back on the section I had applied it.<br /><br />Wow, what a difference the Yamalube Polish made in the color of the bags. The Yamalube Black Polish sure surprised me with how well it made the saddle bags look. Torch gives the Yamalube Black Polish a M.M.M. They cost around 1/3 more than my Motoboss Airflow Gloves, which I am still using. The FieldSheer <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glove" rel="wikipedia" title="Glove">gloves</a> functioned, fit, and felt great, until they started falling apart.<br /><br />The shell of these gloves is constructed of 95% Goat Skin and 5% “Other”. It’s that 5% “Other” that ruined a perfectly good pair of gloves in short order. The goat skin <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather" rel="wikipedia" title="Leather">leather</a> is comfortably soft and supple. There is an extra padded section for your palm. These Bob gloves have the back side perforated, including on the fingers and thumbs, for air flow. The wrist section of the FieldSheer <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_%28person%29" rel="wikipedia" title="Model (person)">model</a> 57 is constructed out of an elastic stretchy material, comfortable, but extremely short lived. In fact, there were already holes formed between the elastic <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuff" rel="wikipedia" title="Cuff">cuff</a> and the leather part of the gloves.<br /><br />I went to the FieldSheer website and read all about how they care about quality so I decide to send off and email to their <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customer_service" rel="wikipedia" title="Customer service">Customer Service Department</a>, but I guess they do not have one. Here is a copy of my email:<br /><br /><br /><i>Dear FieldSheer,<br /><br />I recently purchased a new pair of your FieldSheer 57 Bob Perforated Black Men’s Size XL Gloves from a local <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.yamaha.com/" rel="homepage" title="Yamaha Corporation">Yamaha</a> dealer in Hurst <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas" rel="wikipedia" title="Texas">Texas</a>. I have used them off and on for my commute to work for about two weeks. Today when I was removing them I noticed some strange striations in the elastic cuff area of the left glove. Upon closer examination I found, along with the striations, the stitching coming out where the elastic attaches to the leather. I also looked at the right hand glove and it already has a large hole where it has come apart.<br /><br />I had been looking for a pair perforated gloves for some time when I found these. The rest of the glove has been flawless and I really like the fit and I thought at first they were worth the premium price compared to other gloves. This has been my first experience with FieldSheer products. title="Motorcycle">motorcycle</a> truly utilizes all your senses. I have written about the <a href="http://midlifemotorcyclemadness.blogspot.com/2009/08/skull-candy-inkd-earphones-review.html">sounds</a>, <a href="http://midlifemotorcyclemadness.blogspot.com/2009/03/stench-of-ride.html">smells</a> and the effect of <a href="http://midlifemotorcyclemadness.blogspot.com/2009/04/day-ride-to-dublin-texas.html">the sun</a> while riding previously. Another one of the nuances of riding that I really enjoy is touch. You have a heightened feeling of <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Temperature" rel="wikipedia" title="Temperature">temperature</a> change as you ride.<br /><br />While riding in a vehicle you are protected from the elements and will never notice the subtle changes in temperature that you can while riding a motorcycle. When standing, walking or running the changes are generally to slow to notice. There is nothing better while riding on a hot day than to take slight dip in elevation and feel a pocket of cooler breeze against your skin. I think that is one of my favorite things that I enjoy about riding.<br /><br />If you ride on a regular basis you will pick up on patterns of temperature changes while you ride. This is because hot air rises and cold air sinks. If the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Road" rel="wikipedia" title="Road">road</a> you are traveling suddenly takes a drop in elevation you generally can actually feel the drop in temperature as you descend. Since cold air seeks lower elevations, naturally you will find it along creeks and <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River" rel="wikipedia" title="River">rivers</a>. Of course, the opposite of this is true as well. In <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas" rel="wikipedia" title="Texas">Texas</a> you can sometimes feel these temperature changes on longer bridges and overpasses.<br /><br />Another factor that comes into play is the location of cover. Trees and buildings also block the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind" rel="wikipedia" title="Wind">wind</a> and as the day warms up they will hold the cooler air at bay. There is a small wooded area with a creek in it by my house and usually on a hot day I will feel a nice cool section of the road while riding through the area. I don’t know why it feels so invigorating but I guess it just makes you more cognisant that you are alive.<br /><br />Some temperatures are just not comfortable and you better have the correct riding gear to compensate for it. <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Weather" rel="wikipedia" title="Weather">Hot weather</a> gear for summer, cold weather gear for winter and rain gear for the rain. It is fun to race a storm to your destination before it starts to rain, or to stay out in front of a storm. <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tornado" rel="wikipedia" title="Tornado">Tornadoes</a>, <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning" rel="wikipedia" title="Lightning">lightning</a> or hail is not something you wish to tangle with on the back of a motorcycle.<br /><br />Having your senses bombarded with information is just one of the things that make riding a motorcycle so exciting and enjoyable. I had acquired an <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/">Apple</a> IPod <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPod_Nano" rel="wikipedia" title="IPod Nano">Nano</a> a short time back which I had won in a contest at work and did not use very much. I had filled up the Nano’s four Gigs with great music including Oldies, Classic Country, <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classic_rock" rel="wikipedia" title="Classic rock">Classic Rock</a>, Contemporary Country, Blues, Disco and, Jazz genres. I still have a hard time keeping just my top favorites on the Nano’s limited storage space, there are still other music and genres I would like to include.<br /><br />One of the things I did not like about the IPods was those uncomfortable <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headphones" rel="wikipedia" title="Headphones">ear buds</a> that came with them. They are large, bulky and extremely uncomfortable. Since I ride with a half helmet I decided to look for some comfortable earphones so I could listen to music during my work <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle" rel="wikipedia" title="Motorcycle">motorcycle</a> commute. I had heard of earphones with <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_noise_control" rel="wikipedia" title="Active noise control">active noise cancelling</a> and since I have <a href="http://cobrausa.com/">Cobra</a> exhaust I figured that feature would be helpful. I found some at <a href="http://www.walmart.com/">Wal-Mart</a> and they did have active noise canceling that required a double A battery to power.<br /><br />I rode with them on to work and home one time before I donated them to one of my teenaged sons. It was not that they did not work; it’s that they worked way too well. I cannot even remember what brand they were. The problem I had with them was that I could not hear anything. I couldn’t hear my exhaust nor could I hear the sound of the vehicles on the freeway coming up along side me. My motorcycle, a V-Star 1100 Classic does not come with a tachometer and without the sound reference I could hardly tell when to shift.<br /><br />Part of the problem was at the time I was a fairly new rider. Not being able to hear the traffic around me really scared the beJesus out of me. It almost scared me as bad as the time on the way home late in the day on a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-lane_expressway" rel="wikipedia" title="Two-lane expressway">two lane freeway</a>. A vehicle passed me on the left lane and its shadow followed it on my right. I happened to be passing an onramp on my right at the time. I about jumped off the bike catching the shadow to the right in the onramp lane in my <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peripheral_vision" rel="wikipedia" title="Peripheral vision">peripheral vision</a>, overtaking me.<br /><br />It’s been a year and a half now and I decided to try again with <b><i>non</i></b> noise cancelling ear buds. I guess you figured out I live close to a Wal-Mart now. I picked up a pair of Skull Candy Ink’d Earphones. Here is the description with specs from their website:<br /><br /><i>Ink adds permanence. I had started off with the larger size but they kept the body of the speaker housing out too far. This distorted (lessened) the sound and made the wind rush around them louder. The gel part makes cleaning the Ink’d earphones easy enough. Just hold the gel ear cup upside down, slightly squeeze and shake. I cannot believe I’m writing about earwax.<br /><br />Sound quality is not too bad for MP3 files playing through small earphones. I did have to turn on the IPod’s bass boost setting, found in the EQ section. This helped with the trebly tinny sound inherent in small speakers. Then I dialed in the sound level to the desired comfortable level. I have the level set to where I can enjoy the music and still barely hear the traffic and Mistresses Mighty V-Twin purr.<br /><br />I am fairly sure I would not want to ride a motorcycle with all the sound blocked out by ear plugs. I feel you need to use all your senses when guiding a metallic rolling horse down the rode. Skull Candy did a real good job with these Ink’d earphones. They are small and compact, extremely comfortable, size adjustable, and sound good. On top of all of that, they come in numerous colors and are inexpensive on the pocketbook. I sat on several different <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle" rel="wikipedia" title="Motorcycle">bikes</a> worried that I would find one that felt nice and catch new bike fever. However, that did not happen. None of them really felt that great to me. The closest in comfort to me was the Star Stratoliner.<br /><br />Browsing the venders that were present I made several small purchases. Some thin leather non vented gloves for cool riding. Another pair of winter gloves with built in zip out rain covers. Lastly some clear <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goggles" rel="wikipedia" title="Goggles">goggles</a> for riding in the rain and at night. Oh, and one <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cotton" rel="wikipedia" title="Cotton">cotton</a> bandana. <br /><br />We signed up for all the drawings and missed most of the shows and got out of the Dallas Convention center shortly after lunch. I’m not much of a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photographer" rel="wikipedia" title="Photographer">photographer</a> so bear with the photos. (Frisco has screwed everything up.)<br /><br />Dallas has its own version of traffic rules... "Hold on and pray." There is no such thing as a dangerous high-speed chase in Dallas. The restaurant exterior was made of rough weathered wood and had a wood shingle roof and had an old <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Log_cabin" rel="wikipedia" title="Log cabin">log cabin</a> feel to it. There was some type of pine trees scattered around it ad a nice breeze blowing through that helped with the heat. The parking lot is fine gravel so I advise taking it slow and cautious. The lettering on the door stated Weekdays 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Saturday & Sunday 1 p.m. – 9 p.m. Closed Wednesdays.<br /><a href="" name="more"></a><br />The first elderly couple to arrive after me came in a white car with <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas" rel="wikipedia" title="Texas">Texas</a> plates. I asked them if they had eaten hear before and if it was good. They had and I said that must mean it was good if they came back again. We chatted about the bikes and the scooter. The VTX owner bragged about how much better the ride quality was since he installed a new Mustang seat. Before he said it was like riding a log. He claims when grocery shopping he can fit five grocery bags under there. He said they run great at highway speeds as well. They also mentioned that the airstrip next door had been closed down a few years before. People used to fly in for lunch or diner here. Before long the restaurant doors were being unlocked.<br /><br />I went in and the hostess said we could seat ourselves. I took a spot in the main room in a corner by the window at a small table. You could look out the window behind the restaurant and see the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=31.0194444444,-91.7477777778&spn=1.0,1.0&q=31.0194444444,-91.7477777778" rel="geolocation" t="'h" title="Red River (Mississippi watershed)">Red River</a> in the distance. The waitress showed up shortly and asked what I would like to drink and did I want the catfish. I responded water with lemon and yes to the catfish. She came back shortly with some <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleslaw" rel="wikipedia" title="Coleslaw">coleslaw</a>, sweet <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pickling" rel="wikipedia" title="Pickling">pickled</a> green tomatoes, and hushpuppies. The hushpuppies were too hot to bite into yet so I started in on the slaw and tomatoes.<br /><br />The eating utensils were packaged and at the table in a holder as well as a roll of paper towels to clean your hands with. The coleslaw was good and not too sweet. It was diced up to a real fine consistency, the finest I had ever seen. I had never tasted sweet pickled green tomatoes before but they were excellent. They tasted like a sweet pickle and had a slight spicy hotness to them. Note to self; look for these in the store. The hushpuppies finally cooled down and I sampled them. I texted a status report to my better half and about that time the main course arrived.<br /><br />The main course was three large pieces of farm raised catfish <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_frying" rel="wikipedia" title="Deep frying">deep fried</a> with a crunchy cornmeal coating. The waitress asked if I needed anything else and since there was already ketchup on the table I asked for some tarter sauce which she quickly brought out in a condiment squeeze bottle. Along with the amazing fish were the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_fries" rel="wikipedia" title="French fries">French fries</a>. So many French fries that they were heaped on the plate and falling off as the waitress set the plate down, in fact. These weren’t ordinary fries either. They were a great compliment to the catfish and I used the ketchup liberally. The waitress asked me several times if I wanted more catfish since it was all you could it but, even though I had not eaten any breakfast, because I was so hot I did not have my normal appetite and I turned her down.<br /><br />The feeding frenzy was over and it was time to go. I tossed a five spot down for my attentive waitress, took one last drink of water, and proceeded to check out. The food was great however I would have preferred my catfish a little moister inside. If you like yours real crispy you would have loved it. I went outside, rolled my sleeves down, put my gear on and started the ride home.<br /><br />The ride home was rather uneventful. I rode straight through and was trying not to have to stop for fuel. When I got to Western Central Blvd the freeway came to a grinding halt and it was stop-n-go all the way down and around 820 eastbound to just past Rufe Snow. Looking down at the thermometer it was now reading almost 100 degrees.<br /><br />There was a half mile reprieve and then where 820 merges with 183 Airport Freeway it stopped again and was backed up just as far as I could see. I managed to make it over to the Precinct Line exit and turned left and then right into the Quick Trip and refueled. Not wanting to get back into the traffic on the freeway I took Harwood the rest of the way home. Walking inside my house it was almost 4:00 pm. I had my IPod Nano playing 615 songs randomly through my Ink’d earphones. I glanced at the Yamaha V-Stars’ trip odometer and I only had 34 miles on this tank. No need to stop for gas before leaving, I thought to myself. The ambient temperature thermometer mounted on my handlebars read 80 degrees <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fahrenheit" rel="wikipedia" title="Fahrenheit">Fahrenheit</a> and felt nice and cool as I rode away. I was leaving on my motorcycle ride to Marietta Oklahoma and specifically to McGehee Catfish Restaurant for lunch.<br /><a href="" name="more"></a><br />On my head I was wearing a cotton dew rag under my HJC Helmet, and my Oakley sunglasses. I had on a pair of blue jeans, a full sleeve cotton shirt, (with the sleeves pushed up over my elbows), my black leather FMC vest, and my Bates boots. I decided to use the crumby FieldSheer gloves; I might as well get as much use out of them as I can, before they completely fall apart. This trip I also remembered to coat all exposed surface areas with 45 SPF sun-screen, so as not to become a sacrifice to the sun gods this trip. For the record I should have re-applied before riding home, my face and nose did get some red.<br /><br />For personal protection I had my <a href="http://www.springfield-armory.com/">Springfield</a> XD .40 Subcompact in a <a href="http://www.comp-tac.com/product_info.php?products_id=61">C-TAC</a> holster inside my right waistband, my <a href="http://kel-tec.com/">Kel-Tec</a> P3AT .380 in my left vest inside upper pocket, and my <a href="http://www.kershawknives.com/products.php?brand=kershaw">Kershaw</a> Leek pocket knife in my left front pocket. Too bad I didn’t have room for my Smith and Wesson Boot Knife in these <a href="http://www.batesfootwear.com/US/">Bates</a> boots, oh well. I had my phone, a <a href="http://www.palm.com/us/">Palm</a> Treo, in my right vest pocket and along with a pair of compact reading glasses stashed away with my P3AT it allowed me to post updates of my ride on <a href="http://twitter.com/home">Twitter</a>. In a pinch I could also throw it at an attacker, or just throw it like I’ve wanted to do on occasion. I wondered; does this vest make me look fat? I probably looked like a cross between one of the characters in the movie <a href="http://video.movies.go.com/wildhogs/">Wild Hogs</a> and one of the personalities from the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television" rel="wikipedia" title="Television">TV</a> show <a href="http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/soa/">Sons of Anarchy</a>.<br /><br />I hopped on 121 Southbound, hung a right onto 183 West continued onto 820 West before turning north on I35 W. Before long I was passing <a href="http://www.texasmotorspeedway.com/">Texas Motor Speedway</a> on the left and then the <a href="http://www.unt.edu/">University of North Texas</a> on the right. I was in <a href="http://www.cityofdenton.com/pages/index.cfm">Denton</a>. I decided to stop and get a drink and refuel <a href="http://midlifemotorcyclemadness.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-mistress.html">Mistress</a>. I topped off the tank with unleaded, downed a <a href="http://www.redbull.com/cs/Satellite/en_INT/Red-Bull.com/001242745950125">Red Bull</a>, texted my wife and was off heading north on I35 again.<br /><br />I was making good time traveling at ~~ mph. I did manage to keep it under triple digits, barely. I was passed by someone with Oklahoma plates in a hurry to get home, so I tucked right in behind them. You will be pleased to know that I did see one Texas State Trooper en-rout to Oklahoma. Fortunately, everyone had slowed down with the tell tale brake lights warning everyone. He was parked off the right shoulder down in a ditch or culvert and there was an 18 wheeler between us anyway. Before I knew it I was on the bridge going over the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=31.0194444444,-91.7477777778&spn=1.0,1.0&q=31.0194444444,-91.7477777778" rel="geolocation" t="'h" title="Red River (Mississippi watershed)">Red River</a> and passing a large Welcome to Oklahoma sign on my right. Casino anyone?<br /><br />It wasn’t much longer and I had arrived at exit 32 and was in Marietta. It is about 100 miles from my house to Marietta and the ride took around an hour and a half. After that it was time to take a short tour through town.<br /><br />I drove through downtown Marietta and tried not to blink so as not to miss it. Then I came back around coming down a side street and saw a museum. I had time to kill so I stopped in. It turned out it was the Love County Historical Society Pioneer Museum. The volunteer on duty went out of his way to tell me some of the history of Marietta, including some interesting stories and strange characters as well as pointed out items of historical interest. So I continued heading west and turned south on US77 which parallels I35 and then east on E2150 / McGehee RD which dead ends at the restaurant. Most of the Google Maps are incorrect, unless you look for the one that says Airport: McGehee Catfish Restaurant; the restaurant is at the dead end, not in the city of Marietta itself.<br /><br />The restaurant scouted out I rode back to the town and walked around several stores to kill time until they opened for lunch at 1:00pm. After drinking a <a href="http://www.monsterenergy.com/">Monster</a> energy drink at the Carl Jr.’s, texting my wife again, and browsing some of the local stores, I filled Mistress up at the Valero and headed back to McGehee’s noting that it had gotten a lot warmer, hot in fact, outside. Not in any particular order;<br /><br />Gasoline fueled V-Twin motorcycles will not run without gas.<br /><br />Even light sprinkles of rain sting bare skin at 80 mph.<br /><br />If you don’t know where your horn button is you might hit your high beam switch instead.<br /><br />On a 40 degree day the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wind_chill" rel="wikipedia" title="Wind chill">wind chill</a> at 80 mph makes it feel like 23 degrees.<br /><br />Metal storm grates are slick as ice when they are wet.<br /><br />If you forget to turn your fuel cut off back on your bike will stall about two blocks from your house. <br /><br />Non-waterproof shoes, your socks, and feet will be completely soaked after riding in the rain even with a rain suit on.<br /><br />Yes, motorcycles do make you invisible.<br /><br />It is not safe to talk on a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone" rel="wikipedia" title="Mobile phone">cell phone</a> while riding, (no <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth" rel="wikipedia" title="Bluetooth">Bluetooth</a>).<br /><br />Even if a cage drivers does see you they do not consider you a large enough threat and will still pull into your lane running you off the road.<br /><br />Most cage drivers do not look before changing lanes.<br /><br />The loudest decibel horn cannot be heard inside a closed cage with the radio on.<br /><br />You cannot trust gas station nozzle pumps to stop in time.<br /><br />At night in a hard rain with clear ridding glasses on you cannot see the lines on the freeway.<br /><br />When passing or being passed by large trucks in the rain you cannot see anything for a few seconds.<br /><br />Goggles are better than glasses on a windy day.<br /><br />If you do not secure your saddlebag lid down you will loose things while riding.<br /><br />If you think there is a chance of rain and put on your rain suit it will not rain.<br /><br />If you think there is a chance of rain and do not put your rain suit on it will rain.<br /><br />In winter without proper gloves your hands will get cold and stiff even on a short ride.<br /><br />Animals will run out in front of you at the most inopportune time.<br /><br />You will not notice that your mirrors are not aimed properly until you are already underway.<br /><br />Unless you have ABS your brakes can and will lock up when pushed hard enough.<br /><br />It is a lot harder to stabilize a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle" rel="wikipedia" title="Motorcycle">motorcycle</a> at a stop riding two up.<br /><br />You can get sunburned just as easily riding a motorcycle as not.<br /><br />People give you strange looks when you are wearing leathers.<br /><br />It is hard to get things out of your front pockets wearing <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chaps" rel="wikipedia" title="Chaps">chaps</a>.<br /><br />No matter how long you sit at some stop lights on a bike they just won’t turn green.<br /><br />The more chrome you have the longer it takes to clean your bike.<br /><br />No matter how fast you are riding there is always another motorcycle going faster.<br /><br />Not everyone on two wheels waves back.<br /><br />Even other motorcyclists think you are crazy when you ride all the time.<br /><br />Parts of your motorcycle will vibrate loose and sometimes you may loose parts of your bike while riding.<br /><br />Different parts of your body can get tired and sore on long rides.<br /><br />A leg cramp while riding a bike is a pain in the rear.<br /><br />Aside from shaving your head there is no sure cure for helmet hair.<br /><br />Don't ask me how I know....<br /><br />Ride on,<br />TorchNUR SAIhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13724178268271159148noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7974617160789300866.post-68670480179887250112011-07-12T01:05:00.000-07:002011-08-28T05:26:47.977-07:00How good is Your Motorcycle Oil?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SrYqyEEiOYI/AAAAAAAAAos/GppoB3hjADk/s1600-h/Bearing+001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" iq="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SrYqyEEiOYI/AAAAAAAAAos/GppoB3hjADk/s200/Bearing+001.jpg" /></a></div><strong>How good is Your Motorcycle Oil?</strong><br /><br />The argument about what the best oil for your motorcycle has been keeping internet forums in business for years and yet the great debate still rages on. Do a simple online search and you will get mounds of information on dino oil vs. synthetics and synthetic blends against Full Synthetics. Then the debate rages on as to which full synthetic is better. <br /><br />I do not want to enter into a debate over oils. I will however tell you to use one with the proper ratings your MOM, (Motorcycle Owners Manual), calls for. I will also tell you to change the oil at least at the factory recommended intervals. Lastly, use a good oil <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oil_filter" rel="wikipedia" title="Oil filter">filter</a>. Oil filters are not all created equal, but that is another raging debate, and the topic of another article.<br /><br />I will share with you what I have seen with my own eyes about engine oils. One of our automotive supply dealers, <a href="http://www.dealerindustries.com/">Dealer Industries</a>, representatives came buy the shop with a <a href="http://www.bardahl.com/" jquery1253451064156="33848">Bardahl</a> representative to demonstrate some of their products for the Technicians and I got to set in on a couple demos. One of those demos was for Bardahls <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_oil" rel="wikipedia" title="Motor oil">engine oil</a> additive. <br /><br /><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">For the engine oil additive demo they had a machine set up to demonstrate their additives lubricating prowess. This machine was basically a heavy duty metal box with an <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electric_motor" rel="wikipedia" title="Electric motor">electric motor</a> inside. The motor was hooked up to spin a bearing race on front of the box. There was an amp meter hooked to the motor to show how many amps the motor was drawing as a bearing as pressed down against the spinning race. On top of the box was a series of levers to increase leverage on an arm that held the bearing to press against the spinning race. The bearing was a standard case hardened cylinder shaped bearing similar to a wheel bearing. The arm was also hooked up to a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pressure_measurement" rel="wikipedia" title="Pressure measurement">pressure gauge</a> that included a marker to mark the highest pressure the gauge went to. On the front of the box was a small container to hold the oil that was being tested against the spinning race and kept it about one quarter submerged. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SrYn5sd45BI/AAAAAAAAAn8/xMjff9wfAmg/s1600-h/53016bs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; cssfloat: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" iq="true" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/SrYn5sd45BI/AAAAAAAAAn8/xMjff9wfAmg/s320/53016bs.jpg" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">They started by testing the bulk oil, <a href="http://www.chevron.com/PRODUCTS/" jquery1253451064156="34120">Chevron</a> 30 SAE weight, we use for engine oil changes at the dealer I work at. They turned on the machine that started the race spinning and made sure it was smooth by rubbing a piece of emery cloth against it as it spun. Then they filled the oil cup with the bulk oil. The bearing race now was one quarter submerged in the bulk oil as it spun. A new bearing was attached to the arm directly above the race and the operator pulled the lever down and started pressing the bearing against the race that was spinning in the oil. He slowly applied more and more downward force. As the force of the bearing increased against the spinning race the amperage the motor was drawing increased as did the gauge showing how much pressure was being applied to it. Finally enough downward pressure was applied to the bearing that it stopped the race from spinning. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The operator released the pressure and the black arm of the pressure gauge marked where the bearing seized the race. The pressure gauge did not make it very far up with the dino oil lubricating the bearing and race combination. If memory serves me right it only went up to around 25 on the gauge. Then he started applying pressure again. This time the bearing did not lock up until the pressure gauge read around 95. I was slightly impressed in the change their additive made. I must admit I was also very skeptical and everyone watching was looking for some slight of hand, after all we all refer to these chemicals as “snake oil”.</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div>The demonstrator then said lets compare that to the synthetic that you use. We gave him a bottle of the <a href="https://www.mobiloil.com/USA-English/MotorOil/Home/Homepage.aspx" jquery1253451064156="33712">Mobil 1</a> 10W-30 we use in our synthetic oil changes. He proceeded to clean off the race, clean out the little oil cup and rotated the bearing so we could see how the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobil" rel="wikipedia" title="Mobil">Mobil</a> 1 stacked up. While this was going on I asked him if their additive was compatible with motorcycle wet clutches and he did not know. The demonstrator slowly pressed down and the bearing locked against the race bringing it to a stop with the pressure gauge reading around 45. For some reason I had expected it to do a lot better than the dino oil with a little additive thrown in, but it hadn’t. I them asked if he had tested AMSOIL on the machine and he had not but offered to if I had any. I asked what other synthetics he had tested and it was good to hear that he had tested <a href="http://www.royalpurple.com/" jquery1253451064156="34671">Royal Purple</a> and it had gotten one of the highest readings. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Curiosity was about to kill me now so I went out to my Mistress and got the half a quart of AMSOIL 20W-50 Motorcycle oil I keep in my saddlebag to have it tested. The <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bardahl" rel="wikipedia" title="Bardahl">Bardahl</a> representative finished cleaning off the race, bearing and oil cup and we were ready to test the AMSOIL. Note that this test was not completely fair against the Mobile 1 because the AMSOIL was 20W-50 weight oil and the Mobil 1 was 10W-30. I thought the results were spectacular and it made me very happy in the oil I had chosen to run in my <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_DragStar" rel="wikipedia" title="Yamaha DragStar">Yamaha V-Star</a> 1100 Classic. I was impressed by the AMSOIL. The bearing itself incurred the least amount of damage from the race with the AMSOIL as well. The only variance in the tests that I could tell was the rate at which the operator applied the downward force to the bearing. If this part could be automated it would have taken out the only variable and opportunity for slight of hand that I could see. I honestly do not think that it would have made a difference in the outcome of the tests though. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br /></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I did not write this to bash other engine oils or to put AMSOIL up on a pedestal. I did want to let everyone know what I had witnessed with my own two eyes. I also kept the bearing that they used in the demos and have pictures to show the amount of damage done to the bearing before it locked the race up. I wish I had taken a picture of the machine they used for the demonstration. I could not find a picture of one on the internet, only similar ones. The amp gauge was nice in that it showed how much friction was there between the race and bearing as it strained the motor. I was happy with the AMSOIL results and makes me want to switch to AMSOIL in my other vehicles if I ever get some new ones. I had stopped for breakfast with a coworker on my commute to work one Saturday morning at the local Waffle House. I had just backed the bike into a parking space, removed my helmet, and started walking towards the Waffle House entrance when I glanced back at my Mistress, that’s what I call my bike, and saw the left Custom Classic Hard Leather Saddle Bag was off its rear bracket stud and was leaning down.<br /><br />I had removed the bags only one time before to give the bike a good cleaning and commuted without them just that once. I rode it only partly “topless” because I had left the Memphis Shades windshield on. I have as yet never removed both bags and shield to ride her convertible style, top down.<br /><br />I put it back on after eating breakfast and then rode to work and home afterwards. I looked at it again at home and the locking cam did feel like it was binding or just not closing all the way. So I emptied the bag and removed it and lubricated the mechanism with some WD40 and reinstalled the bag. I thought is felt secure, but was too lazy to take the locking bracket off the bag itself to get a better view.<br /><br />Now, fast forward to a week ago, <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commuting" rel="wikipedia" title="Commuting">commuting</a> back and forth to work every day as usual. I was on my homeward bound commute on a Friday in the usual D/FW <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rush_hour" rel="wikipedia" title="Rush hour">rush hour</a> traffic, wearing full leathers, impatiently weaving in and out of bog downs but mostly staying in the “fast lane”. I exited 183 Airport Freeway onto 121 north picking up velocity to normal highway <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruise_%28flight%29" rel="wikipedia" title="Cruise (flight)">cruising speed</a>. I took my normal exit, Cheek-Sparger Rd. as usual and down shifted one time to start <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_braking" rel="wikipedia" title="Engine braking">engine braking</a>. <br /><br />That’s when it happened. I rode over a small seam crack in the road and I heard a clunk from the left rear of my bike. I glanced back just in time to catch out of the corner of my eye the saddlebag hitting the ground and take off tumbling down the side of the road. Checking my mirror I see it go cart wheeling off the left shoulder of the exit lane and into the median grass on the side of the <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freeway" rel="wikipedia" title="Freeway">freeway</a>. I merged with the access road and exited in the first parking lot. <br /><br />As I park the bike I see a white pickup pulling over onto the shoulder with its hazard flashers turned on. I get off the bike and remove my helmet and start walking back up the access road. I see the driver get out of the truck and go get the saddlebag. He put it in his truck and started back down the access road in my direction. He sees me walking back up the access road and signals me he will pull into the parking lot where my bike is parked.<br /><br />The <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_Good_Samaritan" rel="wikipedia" title="Parable of the Good Samaritan">Good Samaritan</a> pulled in behind my bike and gave me back the prodigal saddlebag. I thanked him and asked if I could pay him for his extra effort. He declined and offered some bungee chords but I had a bungee net in the saddlebag. I strapped the bag to my pillion seat and thanked him again as he left. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/Su2b6IpwAXI/AAAAAAAAApM/-Ih0gYlqWXI/s1600-h/img072.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_BEeyBtcxTfQ/Su2b6IpwAXI/AAAAAAAAApM/-Ih0gYlqWXI/s320/img072.jpg" vr="true" /></a></div>That Saturday I took it completely apart removing the bracket from the bag. The bag itself was not damaged too badly. The hard plastic backing plate was cracked on one corner, it was scrapped and scuffed up and some of the stitching had come loose on the lid. Considering what it had been through it came out well. I managed to get the bracket lock to unbind so that it would fully lock the bracket in place. I remounted the bag on the bike and made sure it was secured properly. Then I reinstalled the contents I usually carry back inside.<br /><br />This was a good luck <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luck" rel="wikipedia" title="Luck">bad luck</a> story. It was bad luck that the Saddlebag came completely off the bike while riding, and it is not easy to get off the bike when you are purposely trying to remove it. Good luck that it did not happen while I was in the middle of traffic or the fast lane of the freeway. People who try to give off the impression that they are one thing when they are really another. </em><em><br /></em><br /><em>Also, a poser can be one who says they can do something that they can't….”</em><br /><br />Here are the reasons why I’m just a “Poser”:<br /><br />1. I don’t ride a Chopper I ride a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://community.cruisercustomizing.com/" rel="blog" title="Cruiser Customizing">Cruiser</a>.<br /><br />2. I don’t ride a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.harley-davidson.com/" rel="homepage" title="Harley-Davidson">Harley Davidson</a>; I ride a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yamaha_DragStar" rel="wikipedia" title="Yamaha DragStar">Yamaha V-Star</a> 1100 Classic.<br /><br />3. I wear a helmet, (a half helmet anyway).<br /><br />4. I occasionally wear a Dew Rag my daughter gave me as a gift, or the ones my mother-in-law picked up for me to keep my hair in line and sweat out of my eyes while I ride.<br /><br />5. My <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_phone" rel="wikipedia" title="Mobile phone">cell phone</a> is a <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palm_Treo" rel="wikipedia" title="Palm Treo">Palm Treo</a> running MS Windows Mobile.<br /><br />6. I wear my inexpensive Timex Ironman watch on my commute to and from work.<br /><br />7. I wear an oversized FMC <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leather_jacket" rel="wikipedia" title="Leather jacket">Leather Jacket</a> when the weather warrants it and an OSI Cool Mesh Jacket in summer.<br /><br />8. I don’t carry a check book and my wallet is usually empty.<br /><br />9. I tend to shy away from designer clothes, but I love my black Guinness T-Shirt.<br /><br />10. I don’t currently own a biker wallet but I am looking for one that I could take the chain on and off for when I’m at work.<br /><br />11. My bike is not a Garage Queen, but only gets ridden at least five days a week and is usually parked out in the elements all day at work.<br /><br />12. I have to ride to work in dress slacks and other times I like my black Wranglers.<br /><br />13. I wear oversized <a class="zem_slink" href="http://www.streeteagle.com/" rel="blog" title="Street Eagle">Street</a> & Steel Leather Chaps when the weather warrants.<br /><br />14. I wear my Harley, or my Bates boots to ride in.<br /><br />15. I work on my own bike.<br /><br />16. I wear Oakley Sunglasses my sister-in-law gave me for <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas" rel="wikipedia" title="Christmas">Christmas</a> many years ago or some inexpensive clear motorcycle glasses at night.<br /><br />17. I have a Guardian Angel Bell hanging off the bottom of my motorcycle that my daughter gave me.<br /><br />18. I enjoy reading about motorcycling.<br /><br />19. I like motorcycle racing.<br /><br />20. I publish a blog about <a class="zem_slink" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motorcycle" rel="wikipedia" title="Motorcycle">motorcycles</a> and motorcycling.<br /><br />21. I tweet about motorcycling, <a href="http://twitter.com/home">Torch762</a>.<br /><br />22. I don’t belong to a Motorcycle Club.<br /><br />23. I like other folks that ride other brands and classes of two wheeled transportation.<br /><br />24. I have not been riding since birth.<br /><br /><br />So, despite that I ride more days than not, and even in the rain, (they think I’m crazy at work), I am just a “Poser” after all.
